Mosquitoes and Silverfish and Bed Bugs, OH! My!
Even the Yellow Brick Road wasn’t infested with any of these very pesky insects.
September heralds in the beginning of Fall and usually as life settles back into the routines of school and work. Since you are spending more time at home, you might start seeing more insect activity in and around your home by these unwelcome visitors.
Knowledge and basic understanding of these three insects will help remove the fear and annoyance associated with them.
Mosquitoes
There are over 2,500 species of mosquitoes and they are a health risk as well as an annoyance for both humans and dogs. Female mosquitoes bite and suck blood from their victims as needed to lay eggs and continue the life-cycle. They carry many deadly diseases like the West Nile Virus which affect both humans and animals. Mosquitoes can lay up to 300 eggs and propagate in still waters. Adult male mosquitoes do not bite. They feed only on plant nectar and are harmless.
Our evaluation of your home will include thoroughly reviewing your outside property and recommending treatment protocols, eliminating the late summer and early fall culprits as well as preparation and prevention for the spring mosquito season. Mosquito season in our area runs from late March through late October and some years through December!
Silverfish
Silverfish match their name because of the insect’s silvery, metallic appearance and fish-like movements and shape. They are also known as bristletails because of their three long, bristle-like or tail-like appendages on the rear end of their body. They are found throughout the U.S. and are typically seen in moist, humid areas in the home such as attics, basements and bathrooms.
Their nature is to hide their presence from humans, which means any damage they have caused can go unnoticed, often feeding on paper goods, books, magazines and cardboard. Reducing clutter, addressing moisture issues like leaking pipes and targeted product application can help reduce silverfish populations. Ask your Angel Pest Control professional about fall and winter silverfish targeted applications and treatments.
Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs are small, oval, brownish insects that live on the blood of humans. Bed Bugs have flat bodies about the size of an apple seed. After feeding, however, their blood-filled bodies swell and are a reddish color.
They do not fly, but they can move quickly over floors, walls, and ceilings. Over a lifetime, female bed bugs may lay hundreds of eggs, each of which is about the size of a speck of dust. Immature bed bugs, called nymphs, shed their skins five times before reaching maturity and require a meal of blood before each shedding. Under favorable conditions the bugs can develop fully in as little as a month and produce three or more generations per year. Although they are an extreme nuisance, they are not thought to transmit diseases.
Bed bugs may enter your home undetected through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches, and other items. Their flattened bodies make it possible for them to fit into tiny spaces, about the width of a credit card. Bed bugs do not have nests like ants or bees, but tend to live in groups in hiding places. Their initial hiding places are typically in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and headboards where they have easy night time access to their human and animal food source.
It is very difficult to get rid of bedbugs and as their population begins to grow, they spread from hiding places in and around the bed to other places in the home or business, like couches and recliners. Some studies show bedbugs can go several months without a blood meal so closing off an infested room for a few weeks hoping the problem will go away is not an effective method for solving a bedbug problem. Thorough elimination can be accomplished through a combination of treatment protocols but it must start with a detailed inspection and professional oversight using the latest products and industry methods.
